Black Lives Matter backs calls for equality commission

A civil rights group in Jersey has backed calls for the island to have its own equality and human rights commission.

Black Lives Matter has written to all States members asking them to approve various measures in a debate expected on Tuesday.

The group said it hoped members would agree to rename Trenton Square on the Waterfront, which is named after a town in America which was itself named after a former slave trader.

It said it also supported plans for a memorial to mark the island’s involvement in the slave trade, and an audit of all the other memorials in the island that might relate to former slave traders.
